April 2001

19/20 points. MD 20/20, non-vintage, Grape. Price $2.99 at Winco. Outstanding! The only thing that caused this to lose a point was the alcohol tasted a bit too hot. Otherwise, this is one top-notch wine for the money. Went well with Tuna Helper and canned cream-styled sweet corn.

11/20 points. 1999 Brisa Del Mar, California, Cabernet Sauvignon. Price $2.99 at Trader Joe's. I was able to make a trip to Trader Joe's this week while attending a seminar and picked up a few "cheap" wines. Here's the review from one of these.  Medium cherry red, very light red at the rim. Sour cherry and tar scents come through with a little bit of wood. The palate follows the nose, with sour cherry dominating. A bit of sweetness comes through at the end. Not bad for three bucks and it went ok with pepperoni and cheese pizza.

18/20 points. 1998 Chateau Beychevelle, St. Julien. Price $27.99 at Costco. Very dark red core with a bright almost fluorescent red rim. Very perfumed nose of cabernet fruit and cassis. Somewhat herbal on entry, this wine quickly became expansive on the palate. Gobs of red fruits, herbs, and sweet but slightly chalky tannins. Finish is medium in length.  A very good wine and a great relatively inexpensive value in Bordeaux. I've got another bottle and I'm not going to drink it for at least 5 years. Let it age!

18/20 points. 1998 Domaine Fournier Pouilly Fume. Price $16.00 at Creekside Cellars, Chico, CA. First off, let me say this is one of the best whites I've come across for under $20.00! Very light gold in color, it also has very good "legs" for a white. The nose is full of nectarine with hints of rose petals and jasmine. The nectarine follows on the palate with a very good balance between body and acid levels. It finishes slightly herbal with lemon zest nuances. This is very well structured. Enough said, I like it!

16/20 points. 1998 Dry Creek Vineyards, Heritage Clone Zinfandel. Price $10.99 at Costco. Very good classic Zinfandel with an excellent nose of plums and briar. In the mouth, stronger flavors of raspberry and bing cherry dominate. Wood and spice follow, supported by good acids and dusty tannins. All this at under $11.00! This was great with pizza.

16/20 points. 1997 Gallo of Sonoma, Dry Creek Valley, Zinfandel. Price $7.99 at Long's Drug. Nice bright ruby red with good legs. Very good nose of fresh raspberries, wood, and just a bit of licorice. The raspberry flavors follow, but with a nice surprise of jamminess. Pepper and spice follow with a touch of astringency and heat on the finish. A very nice wine for eight dollars.

14/20 points. 2000 Danfield Creek, Amador County, Sauvignon Blanc.  Price and location unknown. Here we have a "mystery" wine. It's a mystery as to where I or my wife bought it! We don't know, but my best guess is Creekside Cellars, but I am only guessing. Anyway, here goes! Very pale yellow, almost beige. This has a non-typical nose of white peach and grapefruit. These same flavors follow on the palate with a nice finish of lemon zest and flowers. The acid level is on the low side, but it's just enough to keep it from being flabby. One thing, to me this does not resemble a Sauvignon Blanc. It is actually very close to a Viognier. May be a mis-label? In any event, it's still a very good wine. (*wife's note: I happen to love a good Viognier, so I really enjoyed this wine*).
