November 2001

14/20 points. 1996 Conde De Val Demar, Reserva Rioja. Price $ 8.99 at Costco. Here's another "introduction", I keep using that word too much so my wife/editor tells me! This is a good inexpensive way to try a Rioja. Normally very expensive, this comes in at a very attractive price. Purple/Red in color, it presents a good nose of black cherry and wood. Rasberries, black cherry, and herbs make up the palatte. It finishes with a faint impression of earth and mushrooms. The tannin, acid, and body tell me this is a drink me now wine. A good solid wine for the price.

Webmaster's Note

I have recently gone to Windows XP Professional and have found a few glitches. One being that my camera is no longer compatible with my computer. I keep trying in vain though so that I can add the photos of the wine to the site.

10/20 points. 2000 Indian Springs, Viognier, Nevada County, California. Price $16.00 Indian Springs quarterly wine club selection. Pale gold in color with a touch of green. The nose shows that this wine has been "Californiaized", that is to say it's been treated to oak! Viognier, in my opinion, should never see oak. Here it masks the flavors of apricot and flowers that should be there and makes it taste more like a generic California Chardonnay. It gets ten points for showing up. It's very drinkable but it's not variaetly correct.

It's my birthday and while I am consuming wine, I am not doing any reviews today.

17/20 points. Hunter's 2001 Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough. Price $9.99 at Costco. Very pale yellow with hints of green, minus the small bug I just found in my glass! Very good nose of citrus and lemon. the mouth feel is right on the money, along with acid levels. This wine has me convinced that New Zealand really knows how to do white wine. The palate is lush with layers of citrus, grapefruit, and minerals. The finish is medium in length and ends with a note of oiliness. Great value, I would highly recommend this as a Thanksgiving Day wine.

14/20 points. 2000 Renwood Zinfandel. Price $10.99 at Raleys. Very clear, clean, and bright purple-red. The nose is good with plenty of raspberry, wood, and plum. The nose follows the palate but with very strong berry flavors. Though rather one-dimensional and more towards the fruity side, it's a good wine that should be drunk in the near future.

15/20 points. 1999 Indian Springs Merlot, Nevada County, California. Price $14.95 through Indian Springs Wine Club. This is a wine club selection from Indian Springs. I have seen this wine in various supermarkets, or give them a call at 800-375-9311. This wine is a dark rose in color. The nose is very good, lots of briar, berry, and wood. The palate comes across very nicely, mostly raspberry and oak, though it's pretty rustic! The tannins are rough and the acids have a good "bite" to them. It finishes with a slight herbal note. If you've been reading my reviews for a while, you probably know I am not a fan of Merlot. This one, however, has enough "guts" to make it interesting, and it should go with a variety of foods. Enjoy!
