15/20 points. 1999 Parallele "45", Cotes du Rhone. Price $5.99 at Costco. Here we have a pretty fair introduction to a Rhone. Very dark red in color, this has a nose of wood, hay, and barnyard. Sounds strange, but it's not a bad thing. The palate is quite different revealing strong flavors of blackberry and dried cherries. It finishes off with drying tannins and fairly decent acids.

We are deeply saddened by today's events. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this tragedy.

9/20 points. 1999 Beringer Zinfandel, California. Price $5.49 at Raleys. Dull ruby red in color with a pink rim. The nose is mostly wood and ahh... wood! With some moderate mouth swishing, some fair levels of crushed berries, tar, and bell pepper come out. It then becomes spicy and finishes slightly herbal. Warning! If you don't treat this wine like mouthwash, you won't get the flavors I speak of. It becomes mostly herbal and bitter, hence the score.

15/20 points. 1999 Apropos Syrah "Le Faux Frog". Price $11.99 at Creekside Cellars. A French red by way of Toad Hollow! They are a California winery that likes to use "plays on words" Anyway, this is one very good wine for the money. A very nice inky dark red, the nose is redolent of raspberries and spice. The same follows on the palate though it's somewhat thin, it finishes rather nicely with tar, leather, and a hint of blueberry. The tannins and acids give some "pucker" to the wine. Very good, though it lost some "guts" about 1 hour after opening.

13/20 points. 1999 Grey Fox Vineyards, Sangiovese. Price $9.80 at Creekside Cellars. Bright, but cloudy red that becomes clear at the rim. The nose is very earthy with plenty of raspberry and wood. The palate follows the nose but with more of a cherry flavor. The tannins are fairly astringent with acid levels helping to make it "crisp". This is a nice, though lightweight Sangiovese, but it went well with bbq salmon and my wife's homemade spaghetti.

Well everyone, once again I am on vacation. I will start up again in October and hopefully the days will cool off and make for more enjoyable wine tasting evenings. See you then!
Sincerely, The Wine Slob.
