Just a side note here of a wonderful wine we've had recently. It is the 2000 Incognito Viognier, California. The price was $23.00 at The Connoisseur. The wine shop is now out of the wine since only 484 cases were produced. I didn't review it since it would be tough to find. This is one of the few Viogniers that we have tried that was "correct". A little pricey, but well worth searching out.

14/20 points. 1999 Cedar Brook Shiraz, California. Price $3.99 at Trader Joe's. A brooding red, sort of not clear? Almost watery in appearance. Good strong nose of blackberry, raspberry, and oak. In the mouth, more raspberry, strawberry, and blackberry flavors come through. The tannins and acids are fairly light, but it does have good grip and the lingering finish is reminiscent of crushed grape seeds. Another one of those "at $3.99, don't ask questions just buy it" wines.

15/20 points. 2000 Banrock Station Merlot, S.E. Australia. Price $2.99 at Raleys. Dark, dusty red with a purple hue at the rim. Good nose of wood, plums, and chocolate. The plum and chocolate follow in the mouth. Nice and firm on the palate, with moderate tannins, it finishes with a generic berry and hints of tar. An amazing value found in the "we're getting rid of it basket". If you've got a Raleys near you, go search!

15/20 points. 1999 Nugola Vecchia Toscana. Price $5.99 at Trader Joe's. Here is a wine that was recommended by a reader of my site. Blood red with a rim that has hints of purple. The nose has a nice freshness to it, mostly blackberry and cherry. In the mouth raspberry, cherry, and some oak show up. The tannins are chalky with crisp acids to help with the balance of the wine. The body I would call medium and the finish somewhat short but nice with herbal notes. Give this wine some time to "open up" about 1/2 an hour before drinking and you won't be disappointed.

14/20 points. 1999 Terra Noble, Carmenere. Price unknown. I don't know how much this wine would cost, but my best guess is fifteen dollars, as it was a gift. This thing is black in color with a bright purple/red rim. Lots of glycerine on the glass (legs) shows what a brooding monster this wine is. The nose shows off gobs of wood (too much?) that almost masks the raspberry and cherry scents. The wood shows up on the palate along with the same raspberry flavors. After the wood and fruit, the tongue is assailed by very robust, drying tannins. If you like big, chewy, rustic wines, maybe this one is for you?
