12/20 points. 2000 Springwood Cabernet-Merlot, S.E. Australia. Price $2.99 at Trader Joe's. Dark cherry red with a purplish rim. Fairly decent nose of generic berry and a good dose of oak. The palate follows the nose but with the exception of a lightly herbal finish that is mixed wth currant overtones. It has decent tannins and acids, which go along with my findings that it needs food to "bring it out". Not too bad for three bucks.

10/20 points. 2000 Chateau Rougier Bordeaux. Price $3.99 at Trader Joe's. Dark cherry red that fades to a very light red at the edge. There's quite a bit of wood on the nose that almost masks the cherry and raspberry notes. In the mouth it becomes rather green tasting with tobacco and herb flavors. It then becomes very astringent which wipes out the rest of the fruit flavors that tried to come out. This tastes like a young Bordeaux except that it doesn't have the "stuffing" to age. Kind of on the border of acceptable even at roughly four dollars.
