13/20 points. 2000 Zenith Vineyards Pinot Noir, Marlborough, New Zealand. Price $7.50 through K&L Wine Club. Very bright clear/red with a watery rim. This started off with classic barnyard aromas that changed to a woody raspberry after about an hour. Very Burgundian flavors are brought out with food, but without they are more towards the dried cherry and currant side. It finishes medium long but slightly bitter. I'm not sure I am exactly crazy about this wine, but it is very close to its French counterpart, only on a smaller scale.

14/20 points. 2000 White Oak, Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley. Price $9.59 at Costco. Very pale gold with a nice nose of grapefruit and peach. The mouth feel is good. Crisp acids support the continuing flavors of grapefruit, white peach, and lychee. The acids  also provide very good palate cleansing. Not exactly at "normal" Sauvignon Blanc, but a good one none the less.

11/20 points. 1998 Gabbiano Chianti Classico. Price $7.40 at Costco. A sort of watery rose-red fading to pink. The nose is an indistinct dusty currant. However, this wakes up on the palate. Good flavors of cherries, sour cherry, and red fruits make it more interesting than you would think. The tannins are quite drying and the acid level is pretty brisk. Food helps to bring this out. I think it needed a bit more body to round it out, but it's not bad for the money.

13/20 points. 1999 Laboure'-Roi, Pouilly-Fuiss'e. Price $10.50 at Costco. Very light straw color and maintains this color to the edge. The slight nose of green apples is refreshing. The same follows but with mouth watering acids and flavors of lemon and lime. The finish is pretty one-dimensional. Not quite as good as last year's, but still a nice wine.

6/20 points. 1999 Robert Mondavi Coastal Sauvignon Blanc, Central Coast. Price $6.99 at Albertsons on sale. Very pale yellow, rather watery looking. The nose is almost non-existent and the same goes for the flavor department. Very insipid, flabby, and just lacking any character resembling a Sauvignon Blanc. Sorry Bob, you missed the boat with this one!

16/20 points. 1999 Errazuriz, Curico Valley (Chile), Merlot. Price $6.60 at Costco. If you're a follower of my web page, you'll notice that I don't review many Merlots. Generally, I don't like them much. Most of them that I find are in the class of " of all the Merlots I've tried, it's certainly one of them". Well, this one is not. A dark brooding red, the color goes all the way to the rim. The nose is in the woody, briar category with a decidedly odd aroma of well, piss. Sorry! Not bad actually. Very good flavors of berry, wood, and just a touch of plum follow. It finishes somewhat hot, 14 % alcohol, but the finish is nice and long. This has got to be one of the best wines under $7.00 that I have tried so far. Buy cases of it!

15/20 points. 1997 Chateau La Cardonne, Medoc (Bordeaux). Price $13.99 at Liquor Barn. A dark dusty rose with a clear rim. At first the nose revealed mostly wood and not much else, but after an hour or more, good berry and currant scents are revealed. Very good flavors of cabernet fruit come through, but slightly one-dimensional. This wine turns slightly rustic and tannic on the medium long finish. A pretty good wine, but would be a better bargain at $10.00 or less.
